Making quirks work

Custom furniture built to last!

Fitted hinged wardrobes by Fox Wardrobes

We think life would be a little boring if every house was built the same.

A recent project took us from our workshop in Rochester, Kent to a 500 year old property in the beautiful village of Newington, which lies between Rainham and Sittingbourne.

This part of the idyllic Kent countryside is known for it’s distinctive architecture including many Oast houses and old converted farm buildings dotted all around the Medway Valley area.

With its slightly uneven floors, angled ceilings, and peculiar rooms, this particular property is what an estate agent might describe as “charming”. Another word for it might be “quirky”.

We like quirky. We’re born problem solvers, and nothing serves up more problems to be solved than fitting a bespoke wardrobe in an odd layout in an old building.

When a flat pack doesn’t Stack up

Our client approached us at their wits’ end. They couldn’t find a satisfactory solution to their bedroom storage needs. Many of the larger, national companies failed to offer anything other than generic one-size-fits-all products, they knew they had to turn to a specialist.

They were keen to work with a local Kent company, close to Sittingbourne, who were comfortable creating bespoke bedroom furniture from good quality materials.

We were only too happy to oblige!

It takes a personal touch
Our initial design consultation took us to a simply wonderful 500 year-old property in Newington, Kent in the South East of England. This meant we could stand toe-to-toe with the space and see how our solution would measure up. The built-in wardrobe had to fit into a space with angled ceilings on either side, while the floor was out of level by 4 inches, and the ceiling was the same front to back. The solution called for double doors in the middle, offering plenty of rail space and four wide drawers, while an additional four doors would also be installed; two on either side, with more railings and shelving in order to maximise storage space. Storage space was maximised via the usage of corner rails separated by internal shelving, with internal floor space for additional storage options, all while matching the aesthetic of the bedroom. We would finish the hinged wardrobe in hacienda white so as to complement the existing aesthetic of the bedroom. Our final design was approved by the client. They had been told that fitting a bespoke wardrobe into this space couldn’t be done. Yet here we were, making it happen. With the go ahead, we made a beeline to our warehouse to get started bringing our plans to life.

The bespoke solution

When we solve a storage problem, we do so with both style and substance. It’s not enough for it to look good, it has to work well too.

That’s why every inch of space occupied by this floor to ceiling built-in wardrobe had to fulfil a purpose. The three railings, four drawers, and ten shelves allowed clothes and shoes to be neatly stored, leaving the rest of the room clutter-free.

The Fenwick moulding on the doors gave the whole unit a rustic feel, which contrasted nicely with the bright, modern, and stylishly appointed bedroom, while the handles added a little sparkle to the wardrobe.

We take immense pride in our customer service. Throughout the entire project, the owner only met with Fox Wardrobe team members – there were no pushy self-employed salesmen, nor were there any aspects of the job passed off to subcontractors.

From start to finish, we make sure only the very best quality of product is designed, built, and fitted – and it’s all delivered with a ten year guarantee.
